Although this is quite possible the most simple tutorial on this website, the results are quite complex.
Congratulations! You found the mistake! Somehow we left out a crucial paragraph and screenshot during editing, which I understand is being corrected. Here's the missing link, which goes after Step 10's sentence “Go ahead and open them all up”:
Not sure if I'm experiencing the same problems as others, but can't seem to get past Step 7!!
Just wanted to point out that I believe the distinction you gave to rich black is wrong. The slider on the left (With just one color value) Is the color black with 100% black only in it from a CMYK perspective. The other black value you have is an RGB value. Rich black is a term used to define a black value in print pieces.
The shiny and glossy image of 'Web 2.0' is right at home when it comes to icons. Follow this Adobe Illustrator tutorial to create a scalable vector Instant Messaging style icon with the impression of a glossy and semi-translucent surface.

Step 10: We need to create a text line consists of character “I” and “0?. I found a font that looks sinilar to the sample picture which called Earth. By using this font, type out the text line, don't type it too short. Once done, create Outline (Ctrl+O) the text and launch 3D Rotate Options again, and entering the values like picture shown below.
With this object still selected, go into the Effect menu, under Stylize (in the Illustrator Effects section), and choose Scribble. This is one really involved effect. At this point, you can either use the settings shown here or you can experiment to see the different results you can get. Keep an open mind - you may discover a really cool effect. Click OK when you're done.
Step 8. While the both texts on selected, go to Effect > Warp > Wave... Set to Horizontal, Bend: 50, Distortion Horizontal:0 and Vertical:0. Press OK.
That's it! This is a quick and easy way to take one font and turn it into a different style. Don't forget that you can also use the Direct Selection tool to tweak the nodes on each letter and stylize the text even more.
An Instant Messaging icon just doesn't look right on it's own, duplicate the icon at least once to represent the social aspect of IM. Change the colours of the new icon through the Filter > Colors > Adjust Colors option or manually select the mesh points with the Direct Selection Tool and add a new colour swatch.
Be nice. Keep it clean. Stay on topic. No spam.
