Low Energy Lamps

Within the frame of the campaign "Clever akafen" low energy and durable lamps are promoted:

Low energy lamps: They keep on working. Some low energy lamps seem to be everlasting and even after 19 000 hours of uninterrupted burning they still keep on working. Given this lifetime, the purchase of a low energy lamp is absolutely recommendable. In comparison: normal light bulbs normally give up after 1 000 hours. Furthermore low energy lamps use up to 80% less electricity.

LED lamps: Low electricity consumption, minimal heat production and a lifetime of up to 35 000 hours, these are the positive aspects of LED lamps. If the first LED lamps were equipped with several light diodes, the new products are called power LEDs that can be used for basic lighting. Low energy and LED lamps are available with a screw base (E 14 or E27) or push base (i.e. GU 10) for 12 or 230 Volt.

IRC-halogen lamps: These are halogen lamps, which due their special coating have a low energy consumption and longer lifetime than normal halogen lamps. They come in bulbs or for special use (spots, beamer...).

Also try and use energy from renewable resources.

The following table contains the time line for the elimination of classic light bulbs.

Paints

The use of ecologic paint and lacquer not only is good for the environment but also recommended for health reasons. In particular if used indoors, paints should be carefully selected.

In addition to the general criteria the selected products also have to comply with the following criteria. The extension of these criteria now allows including products for outdoor use.

Criteria include various components (pigments, conservation agents,...) and their impact on the environment and human health. They also include the formaldehyde and solvent level, the water toxicity level and quantity necessary. Products also have to be available in various packaging sizes.

Ecological detergents

Washing and cleaning always has an impact on the environment and more particularly on water. Thus, selecting ecologic detergents and appropriate use thereof (dosage,...) are not only important fort he environment but also for the human health.

In addition to the general criteria such products have to comply with specific criteria among others the tenside level the biodegradability in water and the level of other substances (i.e. solvents, bleach, scents, enzymes,…).

Leonardo Da Vinci - EcoCleaner

Aim of the project:

Cleaning work is often carried out by women, by part-time workers, and by workers who are migrants or from ethnic minorities. The working hours, circumstances around the job (i.e. more than one job) and the design of contracts can result in a lack of awareness on hazards and risks associated with cleaning: exposure to dangerous ingredients and to hazardous substances being cleaned (i.e moulds, human waste), psychosocial issues, health problems.

Therefore the Leonardo Da Vinci-project “EcoCleaner” puts emphasis on the adaptation, further development and transfer of existing innovative training curricula for cleaning staff towards "green" and safe cleaning and at the same time addressing future “EcoCleaner” trainers and cleaners as well as private and public employers of cleaning staff for implementation.

The Leonardo Da Vinci project „EcoCleaner“ has a duration of 24 monthes (from October 2011 until September 2013). The European Commission is contributing to 75 per cents of the costs.

This project has been funded with the support from the European Commission.

Too much medication, cosmetics and syringes in the household waste

In 2011 about 120 tons of medication and cosmetics were collected via pharmacies and the SuperDrecksKëscht corresponding to about 235 gr per inhabitant per year. The results of the last representative analysis of household waste however show that most of these products are still disposed off this way. 43, 1 % of the residual dangerous substances found in the household waste were medication and cosmetics which amounts to a very high quantity of about 556,6 tons, i.e 1,128 kg per inhabitant per year.

Medication

Medication serves staying or getting healthy and body care but only if used in the right way at the right time. Substances used in medication can, if inappropriately used or used in large quantities, be harmful for people and the environment.

Medication that was not used should not be dumped into the household waste. Medication – this includes pastilles, lotions, medical sprays, powder, creams, juices, pills, mixtures and drops can all be disposed off at the SuperDrecksKëscht® collection sites or via the pharmacies in Luxembourg (Syndicat des Pharmaciens Luxembourgois).

In the collection sites, medication is separated into the categories „usable“ and „not usable“. Not useable medication and cosmetics will be transferred to the appropriate company and burned in special high temperature incinerators. Packaging of not useable medication will be recycled with used paper.

It appeared that many full or almost full packages were put with the waste. Not used medication implies social costs that could actually be avoided. In this case all social actors – and mostly also the patient – should be aware and responsible when it comes to medication as not only health but also health insurance costs are involved.

Syringes

Used syringes do not belong in the household waste even though the household waste analysis showed that this was still the case for  about 8,5 tons.

Many – mostly chronic – illnesses as diabetes are treated by regular injections, which causes the number of needles to increase at the household level. If not disposed off appropriately used syringes can be a significant risk. Staff of the recycling centers, members of the family and users can get injured unintentionally notwithstanding the risk of infection.

It is important to use the safety box of the SuperDrecksKëscht®  introduced in collaboration with doctors and pharmacists especially for needles and syringes from private household . It is available for free in two sizes – 1 l and 2,5 l.

Body care and cosmetics

The substances contained in body care products and cosmetics can be dangerous if they get to the wrong place.

Cosmetics and body care products as containers with chemical hair colors or similar aggressive cosmetics as well as not used or expired creams, lotions etc should be brought to the SuperDrecksKescht. They do not belong into the household waste.

Appropriate, not too much and not too less – for body care productions and cosmetics this is often a question of personal taste. But too much can be harmful for the environment and for your health as too frequent showers have an impact on the  environment due to excess water consumption and is bad for your skin. Too less however can upset other people. Considering soap and cleaning products, the rule is simple: use mild products that are gentle to your skin with a low impact on the environment. This applies to cosmetics and products as hair color etc.

Body care and cosmetics are nowadays available from traditional and ecological manufacturers. The latter exclusively use natural substances, vegetal oils and greases, they carry out strict quality controls. Many natural cosmetics are tested by independent institutes and qualified as recommendable. Natural cosmetics are available in Luxembourg in natural food stores and some hairdresser salons.

A last recommendation: at the hairdresser or beauty parlor check which products are used. Ecologic oriented companies select products that are good for the environment from production to disposal.

        Cleaners

        cleaners, alkali, acid, neutral cleaners

        Info:

Acid and alkali cleaners are caustic, i.e. they destroy the human tissue and contaminate water. Larger quantities may impact the functioning of water treatment plants. Cleaners may react very heavily with high temperatures and release dangerous gas as for instance chloride gas. Never mix cleaners as this can lead to dangerous reactions.

        Preventing/Reducing:

Before buying specific cleaners, check if you really need them. Clinic cleanness is not always environment friendly. In many cases less is more and using the right dosage can help you save money.

        Recycling/environment correct disposal:

Due to their characteristics, which are dangerous for the environment, cleaners undergo heat treatment in appropriate installations.
