Inspired very much by this rant, with help from my significant other (who is an ES-MX translator, among other things), and listening to the grief of many translators in many languages, I decided to make a chart that attempts to consolidate various linguistic rules, and how they ought to be represented.
My hope is that programmers the world over will consult this table when designing their applications, and, once and for all, put an end to poorly translated software.
Language - Rule | Numbers | Gendered? | Quotation Marks |
---|---|---|---|
English (en-es) | 1 - 10 | No | “ ” |
Spanish (es-mx) | 1 - 10 | Yes | In most cases, “ ”. For literal quotations or internal thoughts: « » |
