Just an additional note. Using the JDK facilities you won't be able to create an IP packet directly. The JDK operates at a much higher level and allows you to get an output stream and write to it, from which IP packets are created, but they're out of your direct reach. Best of luck! -Joel |

Hmmmm... I'm not sure that I get the point of this question... and not sure that this question belongs in "Distributed Java"... First, why would you need to find "available" IP addresses on the network? In most cases, all a computer needs is simply *an* available IP address, and usually this is handled by calling a router using DHCP to assign ... |
I guess that's not possible. Of course you may iterate over all possible IPs, and ping them, but often firewalls drop icmp-echo-requests. No answer isn't guaranteed to mean 'IP unused'. If your network is the internet (it often is, isn't it?), and you would try to get every IP - what a fun for young people hanging around... Why do you ... |

This question gets asked over and over again. You can search this forum for some of the detailed explanations, but in short, the IP address isn't reliable for identification puposes. Not only can it be spoofed, but it's often translated in the course of ordinary network operations. Plus there's DHCP. MAC addresses probably would require a JNI glue class, but they're ... |

To listen for SSH requests without creating a server socket on the SSH port (which you can't because there's already the SSH server running on it), you will probably need to interact with the network interface on a low level.
